Miami Marlins reliever Carter Capps has undergone Tommy John surgery and will miss the 2016 season.
Did his unorthodox windup have anything to do with tearing his elbow ligament?
His pitching motion most definitely contributed to his UCL tear, but it’s not what you think. Capps’ habit of doing a bit of a hop, skip, and a jump off the pitching rubber — an action which has been suggested is illegal — isn’t necessarily why he blew out his elbow. Taking one look at this photo below and you can see Capps “hooks” the ball behind his back, which almost always results in a timing issue whereby the arm lags behind the body. We will eventually take a more comprehensive look at his mechanics and hope to have suggestions on how he can adjust his mechanics to prevent a reinjury when he returns to the mound in 2017.
